ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program is a specialized program in high school that allows you to explore apprenticeship and consider careers in the skilled trades, generally starting in Grade 11 or Grade 12 through the cooperative education program. OYAP addresses the issues of skilled labour shortages, increasing the number of youth involved in the skilled professions, and supporting secondary school reform initiatives (including the development and implementation of transition programs and the expansion of cooperative education and work experience opportunities).

Ways in which you can participate in this program:

  • become an OYAP participant;
  • become an OYAP participant and register as an apprentice while in the program;
  • become an OYAP participant, register as an apprentice, and complete your level 1 through a dual credit program.

REGISTRATION DETAILS

To learn more about OYAP, meet with your guidance counselor and talk to your co-op teacher.

Co-op/OYAP students are covered under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) by the Ministry of Education. To ensure WSIA coverage, a Worked Education Agreement (WEA) is signed by all parties before the student starts.

Steps to becoming an apprentice:

Step 1: Meet the eligibility requirements.
Step 2: Take a co-op course in an apprenticeship trade and become an OYAP participant.
Step 3: Confirm your interest in pursuing the trades and starting an apprenticeship.
Step 4: Discuss with the employer, the possibility of registering as an apprentice.
Step 5: If the employer accepts, your co-op teacher will need to confirm that the employer qualifies as a sponsor.
Step 6: Sign the OYAP Participant Application Form – Section 2.
Step 7: Explore the various Level 1 in-class apprenticeship training options (dual credits).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Must have successfully completed a minimum of 14 credits towards their OSSD.
  • Must be enrolled full-time or part-time in a secondary school at a school board.
  • Must be participating in a cooperative education placement in an apprenticeship trade.
